Day Trips from Bled: Where to Go When You Want More Than the Lake
Bled makes a genuinely great base for exploring the rest of upper Slovenia – most of the region’s best spots are within an hour or two.
Lake Bohinj (30 Minutes)
The obvious first stop, and the one most people already have on their list. Quieter and larger than Bled, set inside Triglav National Park, with better swimming and access to some serious hiking if you want it. Half a day is enough for the lake itself; a full day if you want to add a hike or the cable car up Vogel.
Vintgar Gorge (10-15 Minutes)
Close enough that it barely counts as a “trip” – it’s almost a suburb of Bled at this point. A wooden walkway follows a narrow river gorge for about 1.6 kilometers, ending at a small waterfall. Radovljica (10 Minutes)
The most underrated stop on this list, mostly because it’s so close people drive straight past it. Radovljica has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Slovenia – a compact, colorful square with frescoed facades, a genuinely charming beekeeping museum (more interesting than it sounds, promise), and Lectar, a centuries-old inn where they still make honey bread by hand in the cellar. Two or three hours including coffee, perfect for an arrival or departure day.
Ljubljana (45-60 Minutes)
Slovenia’s capital is small enough to see the highlights in a day – the old town, the castle above it, the riverside cafés along the Ljubljanica. It’s a completely different pace from Bled: more city, more nightlife, less mountain scenery. Worth doing if you have the extra day, easy to skip if your trip is mountain-and-lake focused.
Kranjska Gora and the Zelenci Springs (35-40 Minutes)
Slovenia’s best-known alpine resort town sits at the top of the valley, close to the Italian and Austrian borders. In summer it’s a hiking and biking base; the real gem is Zelenci, a small nature reserve just outside town where the Sava river rises from an impossibly emerald pool – a ten-minute boardwalk stroll that photographs like something tropical. On the way into town you’ll also pass Lake Jasna, a small emerald lake with the famous ibex statue that makes an easy photo stop. Combine both with the drive toward Vršič if you’re heading that way anyway.
The Vršič Pass and the Soča Valley (2 Hours+)
This is the ambitious option – a mountain pass road with dozens of hairpin switchbacks, dropping down into the Soča Valley, famous for its almost unreal turquoise-green river. It’s a long day, best done if you’re comfortable driving mountain roads or happy to take a guided tour, but it’s consistently rated one of the most scenic drives in Europe for a reason.
Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle (About 1 Hour 15)
The furthest trip on this list, but a reliable rainy-day plan: Slovenia’s most famous cave system, toured partly by underground train, paired with Predjama – a castle built directly into the mouth of a cliff cave ten minutes away. It’s the most touristy entry here and tickets aren’t cheap, but the combination genuinely delivers, especially with kids. Allow a full day with the drive.
